Kelley Howell has dedicated her career to public planning and sustainable architecture for higher education and civic facilities, and she has guided LEED-rated projects. Working with large committees and complex design criteria are challenges she enjoys taking on. She believes good communication and teamwork play a large role in the successful outcome of any project.

Howell joined PIVOT Architecture in 2007 and became an owner in 2015. Her project portfolio also includes transit, civic, public safety and affordable housing projects. For her education projects, she has worked with school districts including Eugene, Marcola, Wallowa and Corvallis.

鈥淲orking with school districts is very gratifying,鈥� she said. 鈥淭he improvements we make are helping the community, in some cases, for decades to come.鈥�

In 2020, Howell became a certified Oregon Department of Education schools assessor. ODE鈥檚 assessor training helps architects with a certain level of experience working with schools understand the unique requirements for reporting to the department鈥檚 Technical Assistance and Oregon School Capital Improvement Matching programs.

Murray Jenkins, president and CEO of Ankrom Moisan, has spent 28 years advancing sustainable design and shaping building standards across the West Coast, including nearly 26 with his current firm. Early in his career, he led the design of Luma in Los Angeles, one of California鈥檚 first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design gold-rated projects. The development helped inspire Los Angeles鈥� green building ordinance, which evolved into California鈥檚 statewide CalGreen code.

In Portland, Jenkins worked on 38 Davis, a mass-timber project that became among the nation鈥檚 first to earn LEED v4 certification. He led the design of Wynne Watts Commons in Gresham, Ankrom Moisan鈥檚 first net-zero energy building, delivering affordable housing with advanced environmental performance.

Jenkins is a founding committee member of the Urban Land Institute and helped bring to Portland the institute鈥檚 UrbanPlan program, in which students learn about urban development. He also helped establish the ELEVATE conference, a ULI initiative convening leaders across real estate, design, policy, arts and community organizations to explore possibilities for the area.

Alan W. Jones, AIA, principal at Jones Architecture, has practiced architecture for 30 years, significantly shaping Portland’s Slabtown District through landmark projects including Sawyers Row, New Seasons, LL Hawkins, and Carson South. His work established the district’s design direction by drawing inspiration from pedestrian and shopping districts in Copenhagen, London, and Paris, translating international urban patterns into contextual buildings suited to Portland’s detail-oriented pedestrian realm.

Jones explained that a project’s success depends on “the strength of the fundamental idea, the quality of a project team’s rapport, and a mutually understood goal.” His collaborative leadership approach emphasizes enabling team success through mentorship, honest advice, and the free exchange of ideas.

His developments in Slabtown and Northwest Portland attracted attention from development teams throughout the West Coast, allowing Jones Architecture to export Portland’s urban design sensibility to other regions.

Jones serves on design committees for the Nestucca Ridge Neighborhood Association and Pacific Seawatch Neighborhood Association, and maintains memberships in the American Institute of Architects and Entrepreneurs’ Organization.

Mariah Kiersey, a principal at Ankrom Moisan Architects since 2012, has 23 years of experience in health care and community-focused design. She led the design of Central City Concern鈥檚 Blackburn Center, a transformative facility integrating healing, housing and health care services through collaborative planning between ownership, construction and design teams. The project created a flexible, adaptable space responding to evolving community needs.

Kiersey specializes in health care architecture, designing environments that support patients during both celebratory and challenging moments. Her leadership philosophy centers on empowering others through empathy, curiosity and trust while creating spaces for professional growth.

Active in Portland鈥檚 professional community, Kiersey serves on CREW Portland鈥檚 Forecast Committee and participates in mentorship and DEIB programs at Ankrom Moisan. She mentors emerging architects pursuing licensure and volunteers with We Believe in Portland cleanup initiatives. A Portland native, Kiersey also supports Rose Haven and has led sustainability initiatives as Green Team leader at her children鈥檚 school, fostering environmental stewardship in the next generation.

Jeff Kovel, a principal and design director of Skylab Architecture, now has 25 years of architectural expertise. He leads projects that blend creativity with technical precision. His career reached a significant milestone with the Serena Williams Building at Nike World Headquarters, a 1-million-square-foot structure that represented the largest project he had led at the time. The building reflects what Kovel described as 鈥渢he collective strength, creativity, and curiosity that define our practice.鈥�

Kovel鈥檚 leadership philosophy centers on maintaining an open and curious approach to architecture. He explained that architects must master drawing, construction, development, and economics while staying receptive to new possibilities. This perspective has shaped both his individual work and the firm鈥檚 culture.

鈥淭he curiosity, and drive to connect disparate pieces into something meaningful, is what keeps me pushing forward,鈥� he said. His current work at Skylab continues to emphasize projects that are responsive to their specific community, place, and time.

Compelled to give voice to underserved communities, Jeanie Lai upholds design as an expression of care for people鈥檚 well-being. She has led Bora鈥檚 innovative work in academic environments, civic and cultural centers, and collaborative workspaces.

These projects include the mass-timber Portland Community College Opportunity Center at 42nd Avenue; the Texas A&M University Innovative Classroom Building; Bora鈥檚 award-winning studio at Volta; and Multnomah County Library鈥檚 mass-timber Holgate Library.

More recently, Lai led Bora鈥檚 collaboration with Colloqate on the renovation and expansion of Portland鈥檚 Midland Library. The new entry canopy provides a covered space for farmers鈥� markets, fairs and other events. Its double-height central space features a ceiling mural depicting the Columbia River and shelves lined with books in Chinese, Russian, Vietnamese and Spanish, in addition to English.

Lai told The Architect鈥檚 Newspaper that the library鈥檚 鈥渢hree buckets鈥� are tables and seating for people to hang out, the materials collection, and meeting spaces. 鈥淲e tried to make them all equal in the use of space: a community-centric library for modern times,鈥� she said.
