In the mid-20th century it was common for canvas to be used as covering for cargo holds. So it made sense for the structure at 1732 N.W. Quimby St. to be named the Marine Building because it stored canvas for the shipping industry. It was constructed in 1947.

In the middle of the building, where there鈥檚 now an atrium, a tower was used to hang canvasses to dry.
The building鈥檚 broker, Todd Collins of Macadam Forbes, calls the structure a 鈥減oured-in-place concrete bunker.鈥�

Beginning in 1977, the Marine Building has undergone a number of renovations over the years. When Doug Crane bought the building in 1991, he embarked on a five-phase renovation project. It included installing an elevator, even though the building is only three stories tall. The most recent upgrade involved the building鈥檚 entrance, and was completed just three months ago.

Collins said the weak economy has hurt business in the building, which has about 15,000 square feet available to lease. The good news for tenants is that for the first six months of the lease, the space will cost only $14 per square foot instead of the usual $22 per square foot.

鈥淲e have to do stuff like that with this building to create an entryway into the market,鈥� Collins said.
Crane said the building best suits creative tenants, and that it features high ceilings and a 鈥渨onderful window line鈥� that lets in plenty of sunlight.
