The city of Portland today announced the three inaugural districts for Portland’s new Main Street Program, a neighborhood commercial district program meant to revitalize historic business districts.

The three organizations that will have their districts included in the program are the St. John’s Main Streets Coalition, N.E. Alberta Main Street Program and Hillsdale Community Foundation. Each of the selected areas will receive financial and technical assistance from the city budget as well as training from the .

Multnomah Village Bloc and the 42^nd Avenue Main Street Collaborative were also among the five final applicants but were not selected.

The Main Street Center is a national organization run by the National Center for Historic Preservation meant to revitalize downtown and neighborhood business districts throughout the U.S. through a community-driven, comprehensive strategy. The organization uses a four-point approach to revitalize historic districts. These include organization, promotion, design and economic restructuring.
