The space of a former funeral home, and later a day spa, is for sale is Northwest Portland.

The Spa Building, at 210 N.W. 17th Ave., was built in 1937 as a funeral home and operated as such until 2005. In 2006, it was renovated into a day spa that went out of business last year.

鈥淚t’s a very unique space,鈥� said broker Nick Ostroff of Realty Trust Group.

The building has a 5,332-square-foot space that was occupied by the Terra Del Sol Day Spa. It includes a hot tub, a steam room and massage rooms. The building also includes a 2,549-square-foot cathedral space for retail and a 1,000-square-foot outdoor patio. The building also has two office spaces.

The property is for sale at an asking price of $1.97 million, or $199.86 per square foot.

Originally built as the Hennessey, Goetsch & McGee Funeral Home, the building聽is a contributing building to the historic Alphabet District on the National Register of Historic Places. William McGee was a well-respected and well-known funeral home director in Oregon, according to historic registry documents.

The building’s exterior and Mediterranean-inspired roof shingles are original. The building features stone columns, Venetian plaster and wood floors. The interior was completely gutted during the renovation for the day spa.

鈥淚t has extraordinarily beautiful architecture,鈥� Ostroff said. 鈥淚t’s one of the few funeral homes converted to a different use.鈥�

A few spa businesses have looked at the building, he said, but the spa space in the building could also be used for medical or alternative medical use, like acupuncture.
