Salem City Council on Monday approved its five-year capital improvements plan, which gives the city the green light to spend nearly $206 million over the next five years on specified city construction projects.
The five-year plan details and prioritizes how city money – mostly general obligation bond money stemming from a 2008 bond measure – will be spent on projects associated with transportation, utilities, municipal facilities and community facilities. According to the plan, $38 million is earmarked to be spent in the 2011-12 fiscal year on street and bridge improvements. Read our original coverage on Salem’s capital improvements plan.
Transportation projects will receive about $112 million from the plan. Upgrades to the Commercial Street Southeast Bridge over Pringle Creek in Salem will receive $11.4 million, the largest chunk of transportation money.
Utilities projects will receive $71 million, municipal facilities $15 million and community facilities $9 million over the five-year plan time frame. Work on these projects can begin as early as July.
