The city of Portland has released a short list of four design firms to enter the next phase of bidding on the city’s newest fire station. Ten firms responded to a request for proposals to demolish and re-build the 50-year-old Fire Station 21, located near the Hawthorne Bridge. The fire station upgrade will also include a 10,000-square-foot boathouse.

Portland Fire & Rescue has budgeted $7.9 million from 2010 bond measure funds for the project, with $5 million estimated for construction.

The firms selected to enter the next phase are: Peck Smiley Ettlin Architects, Hennebery Eddy Architects, Carleton Hart Architecture and Whelton Architecture.

The four firms will be interviewed May 16, and the city will issue intent to award contract that afternoon or the day after, said Diane Seaton, contracts administrator for the city.

Fire Station 21 is the last PF&R facility to receive a seismic upgrade, something required of other stations after a 1998 bond measure. The new building will serve as the city’s fire rescue hub, as well as replacing a facility that has been displaced because of the Portland-Milwaukie light-rail project.
