The Lloyd eco-district is ready to kick off as an official entity this summer with the hiring of a new director. Sarah Heinicke, a former sustainability advisor at Brightworks and consultant at Verditas LLC, will begin leading district sustainability efforts July 1, according to Lloyd transportation management association director Rick Williams.

Hiring a director has been anticipated by the business community as a step toward taking concrete action in the district, which is the farthest along of Portland’s five pilot eco-districts. Since 1994, the Lloyd District has had an association organizing the area’s transportation, which is credited with reducing single-occupancy vehicle traffic and bringing light rail to the district. The Transportation Management Association is an example of district-level organization that the eco-district attempt. The eco-district could also include district-level energy and waste management solutions.

Portland’s other designated eco-districts include South Waterfront, Gateway, Lents (now known as the 鈥淔oster Green鈥� eco-district) and the University District, including Portland State University.
