Officials with a Portland nonprofit are looking for someone to buy the building where it operates, but they鈥檙e asking for a little benevolence.

The building, at 3802 N.E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., is home to , an alternative school program for students who drop out of school or are at risk of dropping out. The nonprofit has been paying a discounted rate since 1993 and would like to continue that arrangement under the building鈥檚 new ownership. The 7,762-square-foot building is for sale for $954,900.

Peter and Junco Larsen have owned the building since 1995. The lease rate for Oregon Outreach is $3,700 per month with a nonprofit property tax exemption in place.

鈥淭hey鈥檝e always had difficulty getting enough funding,鈥� Junco said, 鈥渁nd I felt I wanted to support them as much as I could. And it was still a good investment property.鈥�

The Larsens are now retired, and while Junco said she supports the nonprofit, she said she and her husband want to invest in other properties.

鈥淲e鈥檇 like to move on,鈥� she said.

Oregon Outreach started in 1988 and has helped more than 350 students obtain their high school diplomas. The program involves students who are homeless, pregnant, parenting, abused or are gang members, according to Rebecca Black, the nonprofit鈥檚 founder.

The building has also been a source of hope in a neighborhood that has struggled with drug problems and violence, Black said.

鈥淲e feel like we鈥檙e a real vital part of this community, and we feel it would be a big loss to this community to not have this service here,鈥� she said.
