A historic home for sale in Portland鈥檚 Southwest Hills is being touted as a bed-and-breakfast opportunity for someone who wants to get into the inn-keeping business 鈥� or as an extravagant residence.

The Britannia Bed & Breakfast, at 515 S.W. Westwood Drive, has operated as an inn since the 1990s, but it was originally built for one of Portland鈥檚 first prominent families. The 5,541-square-foot building is for sale for $1.15 million.

The home was built in 1941 by the Director family, which includes Simon and Helen Director and Arlene Schnitzer. It was one of the few homes built on the hill during World War II, according to owner Carl Keyes.

Keyes has owned the property since 2005, and charges nightly rates from $105 to $200 for each of the six rooms. The home is on a half acre with a well-landscaped garden.

Most of the construction is original, including most of the windows and hardware. The property has blond mahogany throughout and original plaster. The property also has several original Waterford chandeliers.

鈥淲hen you find out it was for the Director family, you see it does fit,鈥� said Keyes.

He said he鈥檚 selling the property because he鈥檚 had his run as an innkeeper.

鈥淚nn-keeping is a lot of work, and most people run the business for five to 10 years and then it鈥檚 time for somebody else to have an opportunity,鈥� Keyes said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a 24-hour-a-day job.鈥�
