Portland to conduct survey of ‘modern-style,’ mid-century buildings

This summer, the city of Portland will conduct a survey of its “modern-style” architecture, work completed between 1945-1980. The survey, funded by a grant from the State Historic Preservation Office, will look at 150 buildings in the Central Portland area.

The small survey 鈥渁ims to give us a snapshot of modern-era development,鈥� said historic resources planner Liza Mickle.

In this period, new development took the form of office towers, industrial buildings and warehouses, ranch-style houses and specialty buildings like restaurants and banks. The survey will pay particular attention to buildings that have not been previously surveyed or historically designated.

The city of Portland’s historic resources inventory was performed in 1984, and buildings are not generally considered for historic designation until they are 50 years old. The city recently performed a survey of 500 mid-century buildings, mostly homes, in East Portland.

A report from the Modern Historic Buildings Survey will be available in late September.
