Portlanders who played organized team sports as children may remember heading to Bashor鈥檚 for equipment and uniforms.

The former Frank聽Bashor聽Supplies building, at 112 N.W. 20th Ave., was home to the business for 40 years. Bashor鈥檚 moved out last year, and the two-story, 9,500-square-foot building is for sale for $899,000.

The building was built in 1911 as a garage. Thick, old, wooden timbers still support the structure. Cars were hauled up the building鈥檚 large, hydraulic freight elevator.

Bashor鈥檚, which was founded in 1944, occupied a couple of locations before moving to the building. Bashor鈥檚 made new use of the old space, and even used the freight elevator until building code changes forbade it. Then customers started using the stairs, which are rounded out in the middle from years of foot traffic.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a nice, old building,鈥 said Bashor鈥檚 owner Joe Driggers, whose parents bought the building.

Joe鈥檚 father, Charles, invited coaches from the area to meet every spring in the second-floor sample room to make equipment orders. They would look at shoulder pads, helmets and uniforms, and then drink a few beers before submitting orders for the next season.

鈥淎nd then after that my dad would all take them to a big steak dinner at RingSide as a thank you for their orders,鈥 Driggers said.

Bashor鈥檚 moved to a new location at 2828 S.E. 14th Ave., where Driggers said parking is better and contents can be contained on one level.
