Portland’s ZGF-designed Mall Revitalization Project was awarded an Award of Excellence in General Design from the American Society of Landscape Architects this week.

The design for Portland’s transit mall was originally conceived in 1976 and was constructed in 1978, at which time it included only 23 blocks and served as a bus corridor.

The recent revitalization expanded the mall to run from Portland State University to Union Station, with a total of 116 block faces. The project included installing new bus shelters, landscaping, sidewalk improvements and improved traffic patterns. The project is owned by TriMet and the Portland Bureau of Transportation, and has a value of $220 million.

TriMet agency architect Bob Hastings said the award was another national recognition of the city’s efforts to create a livable environment.
