A group representing wood industry associations hopes that a new online calculator will show businesses benefits of using wood as a construction material, particularly on non-residential buildings.

, a cooperative venture of wood associations under the , launched two tools using RSMeans statistical data to compare cost and carbon impact of various construction materials. WoodWorks selected Oregon as a target state for its lobbying because it is a 鈥渨ood-friendly area,鈥� according to national director Dwight Yochim.

Yochim said his organization鈥檚 goal is to find demonstration projects in Oregon that use wood for shell construction on non-residential projects up to six stories tall. Then it will spread the message to less 鈥渨ood-friendly鈥� locations.

鈥淥n most projects, cost-effectiveness ranks right up there with code acceptance and safety on the list of priorities,鈥� said Yochim. 鈥淏y illustrating that wood has significant cost advantages for most building types, we hope the calculator will lead more design and building professionals to take advantage of wood鈥檚 other benefits, such as design flexibility, sustainability and low carbon footprint.鈥�
