No more pencils. No more books. No more teachers鈥� dirty looks. We鈥檙e pretty sure the 鈥渄irty looks鈥� part doesn鈥檛 apply to any of the teachers in the Portland Public Schools system. But faced with shrinking budgets, local schools have had a hard time providing basic supplies — think notebooks, glue sticks, and construction paper — for their students. With an eye toward providing some remedy for the shortfall, the Multnomah Bar Association will spend July and August collecting donations of spiral notebooks and loose-leaf paper, pens and pencils, crayons and markers, pocket folders and other school supplies. Drop off items at the MBA office, 620 S.W. Fifth Ave., suite 1220, in downtown Portland. The collected items will be donated to Schoolhouse Supplies.

David Bartz Jr., president and shareholder of Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt, is the most recent recipient of the Liberty and Hope Award, presented by the Oregon League of Minority Voters. The award is the group鈥檚 highest honor and recognizes those who have taken extraordinary steps in elevating the economic, social, educational and political aspirations of minorities in Oregon. Bartz focuses his practice on litigation of environmental and construction issues.
