New requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act and some of the most frequent mistakes employers make are among the bevy of labor and employment law issues that will take center stage during an upcoming Portland conference.

and the SHRM Oregon State Council will present the 10th annual on March 8 at the Oregon Convention Center. Dubbed 鈥淗.R. Rockstar,鈥 the conference sessions feature rock-song titles and cover some heady workplace issues. A session titled 鈥淧unks, Divas and Trashed Hotel Rooms鈥 incorporates some intriguing role playing.

鈥淲e’ve got some pretty good actors and actresses who are attorneys and who will illustrate what a difficult employee can look like,鈥 said Victor Kisch, a partner in Stoel Rives’ labor and employment group.

Another session, 鈥淛ailhouse Rock,鈥 deals with crime in the workplace. 鈥淔eelin’ Hot Hot Hot!鈥 explores case law and legislative updates. 鈥淚t’s the End of the World as We Know It (and I Feel Fine),鈥 examines how to handle agency complaints.

Victoria Lipnic, commissioner of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, will provide a keynote talk about the and the EEOC in 2012 and beyond. The conference lunch presentation will address common mistakes employers make.

鈥淭here’s a really long list of little-known statutes in the wage-and-hour arena that we suspect employers are not following, so we want to go through the list and discuss some relatively easy ways to handle those,鈥 Kisch said.

The conference generally draws about 400 human resource professionals and in-house counsel who specialize in employment law. During this year’s conference, discussions about the ADA revisions taking effect March 15 promise to draw a crowd, Kisch noted.

鈥淚 think most of us believe that that is the most frequent area in which lawsuits are brought,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t’s one of the most difficult areas for employers because it’s one of the vaguest in terms of what the rules are.鈥
