Construction began this week on a $16 million renovation of the Hollywood District .

Jim Stathos, architect with , which is designing the project, said the store’s interior will be completely redone and a 2,000-square-foot seating expansion to the food area will be added. The building’s exterior will remain the same.

The renovation is one of several recent construction projects  for Fred Meyer. Last fall, its Cornelius store received a $5 million remodel, and its Burlingame branch was torn down and reconstructed for $19 million. Construction on a $20 million remodel of the store on West Burnside Street in Portland is expected to start this year. The company, owned by Ohio-based retail store chain Kroger, usually remodels its stores every 10 years.

Stathos said the Hollywood renovation is similar to the other projects, though it will have slightly different finishes and will require less exterior work. Construction is expected to finish this fall.
