Bidding will start next week for the Blumel Hall Infrastructure Project, a $5.2 million renovation of a Portland State University dormitory.

The nine-story building, which was built in 1986, requires a number of repairs and replacements, including a new roof, heating system and fire alarm system. The building’s water leakage problem will also need to be addressed. is also considering upgrading the dorm units, which would require adding new kitchen cabinets, appliances, flooring and painting.

The renovation will be the latest of PSU’s multi-million dollar projects. Ground broke last year on the $295 million Collaborative Life Science Building, which will provide classroom and research space for PSU faculty and students to work alongside Oregon Health & Science University scientists. Construction also began last year on a mammoth $87.8 million dormitory called College Station.

Construction has been delayed on the renovation because school officials want to wait until the building is vacated for the summer. It is expected to start in mid-July and finish in spring of 2013.
