The new health sciences complex at Chemeketa Community College isn’t just green; it also has impressive cutting-edge technologies to keep it sustainable automatically.
Location: Salem
Cost: $30 million
Start date: June 2009
Completion date: October 2011
Developer/owner: Chemeketa Community College
Architect: SRG Partnership Inc.
Engineers: KPFF Consulting Engineers, PAE Consulting Engineers
General contractor: Lease Crutcher Lewis LLC
Lease Crutcher Lewis constructed a new building on the Chemeketa campus that includes classrooms, teaching clinics and an outpatient dental clinic. In these spaces, there are skylights that can darken electronically, a passive cooling and ventilation system, and windows that automatically open – all technologies designed to maintain light and temperature in the building in a low-energy, sustainable way. Built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design silver standards, the building also features a native medicinal garden and recycled insulation.
As part of the project, Lease Crutcher Lewis also renovated an existing health sciences building to update boilers, air-handler units and exhaust fans.
All of the new construction and renovation for the complex took place on a busy campus, so scheduling and sound concerns were at the forefront of the building team members’ minds. By prioritizing essential construction elements and strategically installing acoustic panels, the Lease Crutcher Lewis team finished the project on time and under budget.
