Fred Meyer has become a Pacific Northwest icon of one-stop shopping. But few of the retailer鈥檚 stores have earned the affections of customers quite like the Burlingame location. So when word came down that the retailer was looking at updating and expanding its oldest store, patrons of the Barbur Boulevard grocery were more than a little concerned.

As it turned out, the renovation and expansion were in good hands.
Original plans called for the remodel to take place during a 13-month full store closure. During the bid period, the time was cut to 11 months with an occupied store. Two reverse auctions later, without a contractor able to meet that schedule, J.R. Abbott stepped forward with a bold plan. The company, which had placed second in both auctions, told Fred Meyer that it could do the entire remodel in just three months with one month of merchandising, as long as the store was unoccupied during the renovation work.
The project team planned on using a 鈥渟tacked鈥 schedule strategy based on a foundation of 鈥渟afety first.鈥 Constant housekeeping was also a requirement for meeting the tight project timeline.
Also, with more than 153,656 hours put in by construction staffers and a peak labor force of 120 workers, the Fred Meyer Burlingame remodel and expansion finished with no lost-time injury accidents, only one restricted-duty injury and no citations.
In the end, J.R. Abbott absorbed nearly $250,000 in costs to keep the project on track and within budget.
