After three failed attempts, Banks School District may have finally won support for a construction bond.
Because the conditions of the school buildings are potentially hazardous to students, the school board decided to put a $10.5 million bond request to voters this May even though the community has kept tight purse strings in the past.
But this bond costs about half as much as last year鈥檚 proposal, a decrease that may have wooed enough voters to fix the worst of the maintenance and safety issues. According to the most recent count of the Washington County primary elections, the 鈥淵es鈥 ballots are ahead of the 鈥淣o鈥 ballots by 13 votes. The results will be updated again on May 29, but not certified until June 4.
If passed, the bond will raise property taxes up to $.28 per $1,000 of assessed value each year. Banks residents are already paying for an Elementary Bond, so the total bond amount until 2027 will be up to $2.35 per $1,000 of assessed property value.
