When Portland-based yoga and sport clothing company decided to expand, it hired the firm that designed its first store, , to design its next three branches in Denver, San Francisco and Edina, Minn.
While the stores will be slightly different, all will be flexible enough to serve a number of uses, according to Stephanie Meininger, a project manager at Di Loreto.
鈥淭hey tried to make each space their own and everything really movable,鈥 she said. 鈥淓verything in the stores is very modular, but it doesn’t look that way 鈥 it looks really sturdy.鈥
Each store will have approximately 3,000 square feet featuring movable racks and walls so that retail spaces can be converted into lecture or exercise areas, according to Meininger. Additionally, each store will have sliding windows and doors at front entrances to facilitate interaction between the retail space and the streetscape.
In addition to the retail/exercise area, the stores will contain storerooms, offices, fitting rooms and waiting rooms. Bike storage areas will be accessible to customers.
The stores’ finishes will be made mostly of recycled material, such as reclaimed wood and recycled carpet. Interiors will be furnished with vintage furniture and a variety of plants to create a 鈥渘atural aesthetic,鈥 Meininger said.
鈥淭hey really like to incorporate the greenery and landscape into the stores,鈥 she said.
The stores will be built in urban areas, but in buildings from different eras. The San Francisco building was constructed in the early 20th century, the Edina one was built in the 1970s and the Denver one is an upscale shopping center that was built in the 1990s. Meininger noted that design was relatively easy because all three spaces were previously used for retail.
Both the Edina and Denver stores are in the design phase, while the San Francisco store is under construction. Laura Boyd Chapman is the interior designer for the projects.
