Fred Meyer is taking advantage of the bankruptcy of former video chain Hollywood Video to expand its facilities.

Two Fred Meyer stores, on Northwest 20^th Place and Northeast Weidler Street, will soon expand into former Hollywood Video spaces. On Weidler, the store will expand into a Hollywood space that once was part of the store, and the 20^th Place store will move into a 35,000-square-foot space located on West Burnside Street.

The 20^th Place expansion is still in the design phase. The project will cost $25 million and will expand the store’s grocery and deli space and add more 鈥渉ome-related鈥� items to the store, according to Amanda Ip, special projects coordinator for the company.

Additionally, the expansion will feature a community meeting room and deck, where neighborhood residents can meet 鈥� a feature not found in other Fred Meyer branches, Ip said. If passed through the design phase, the project is expected to start in January and finish in fall 2014.

Construction began in April on the Weidler Street expansion, located in the Hollywood District. The project costs $16 million and is expected be completed by fall.

Hollywood Video ceased operations in 2010. A number of its former spaces around Portland have taken on other uses, including a number of discount variety stores.
