Forget the ticket stubs or fumbling through pockets for exact change. TriMet riders will soon be able to use their smart phones to ride transit vehicles.
TriMet has signed a contract with local software company GlobeSherpa to pilot a mobile ticket system on buses, MAX lines and the WES Commuter Rail. TransitSherpa would be an app for iPhone and Android devices that would allow users to register a debit or credit card and purchase tickets anywhere at any time.
The app will use a combination of visual authentications such as day-codes, time and date stamps that riders can show to drivers. An 鈥渁lpha鈥 test phase is expected to launch in December with a 鈥渂eta鈥 test phase to follow in January, and TriMet will be recruiting a cross section of riders to help it test the system.
TriMet hopes to launch the system in spring 2013.
