The nonprofit Energy Trust of Oregon recently launched a new wind resource calculator that allows Portland-area residents to evaluate the viability of small wind turbines on their properties. The calculator is called WindSight and is powered by a Brooklyn, N.Y., company called Wind Analytics.

It allows customers of Portland General Electric and Pacific Power to check the strength of the wind at properties that are larger than one acre. Just visit , enter the property’s address and the calculator will say whether the site has 鈥減oor,鈥� 鈥渇air,鈥� 鈥済ood鈥� or 鈥渆xcellent鈥� wind conditions.

Energy Trust recently increased its incentives for small wind turbines that are 50 kilowatts or smaller. Incentives are based on the estimated annual energy production of a given site and can equal up to 60 percent of the installed cost of a small wind turbine system. State and federal tax incentives are also available.
