Salem has a green hair salon. That’s not where the Joker gets his ‘do. It’s an environmentally friendly hair salon.

Hair salons may not have a reputation for being hostile toward the environment, but Designer Cut of Salem is getting noticed for being particularly friendly. It’s the first hair salon to get certified through .

EarthWISE certification means a business has made a commitment to environmentally friendly practices. Businesses that immediately – or eventually 鈥� meet EarthWISE criteria receive public recognition for their green practices.

Roberta Olfert, the owner of Designer Cut, said she and her employees exchanged all of the lighting to compact fluorescents. This not only reduced lighting costs, but reduced the heat the bulbs produce, allowing the air?conditioner to be used less often. They also switched to green cleaning products and recycled paper as well as low-flow faucets and hoses.

鈥淭he quest for this certification not only educated me, but is educating the other hairstylists and nail techs on all the ways we can recycle and reduce waste,鈥� said Olfert. 鈥淚 hope our certification can inspire other salons to work toward being green.鈥�
