Oregon’s largest construction project has doubled down.

After months of speculation, Intel Corporation confirmed today that it will expand into a second phase at its $3 billion D1X fab facility, currently under construction in Hillsboro. The expansion project is being called MOD2 and will be comparable in size to D1X.

Intel did not disclose the cost of the expansion, but Bill MacKenzie, communications manager for Intel, said the company would have more to say about capital spending when its year-end results come out in January. So far this year, gains have been relatively flat with $13.5 billion in revenue reported in the last two quarters 鈥� down from $14.2 billion a year ago.

Intel reported that it is doing the expansion to accommodate new semiconductor manufacturing technology that is expected to be deployed industry wide later this decade.

The MOD2 project will consist primarily of a second module that will be attached directly to the existing D1X facility. It will also include construction of an office building, a manufacturing support building and a parking structure.

When asked if the project would go out to bid or whether it would be an extension of the contract Intel has with Hoffman Construction for D1X, MacKenzie said he could not confirm who the vendor would be for MOD2. The company is currently filing permit applications for the project.
