The fate of the historic downtown will soon be decided.

County staff is currently discussing next steps for the courthouse and will present a proposal to the Board of County Commissioners in early December, according to County Communications Officer Mike Pullen. The proposal will incorporate feedback generated from two recently completed public forums and an online survey.

鈥淭he briefing would summarize public input received at the two meetings and in the online survey, and the proposal would be a suggested next step to move the project forward,鈥 Pullen said.

A study by an independent consulting group was released last summer that ranked five top locations where a new courthouse could be built. Of those five, an area in the Central Eastside Industrial District ranked the highest. Other locations included areas downtown, including the courthouse’s existing property on Southwest Fourth Avenue.

The rankings came from a points-based matrix system that judged each area on a number of weighted factors 鈥 including land cost, public transportation access and sustainability.

The courthouse has a number of ailments spanning back close to five decades.
