A school district in Vancouver, Wash., is hoping to gain money for capital improvements by unloading a former city hall building.

Vancouver Public Schools recently put the 39,567-square-foot, five-story office building at 210 E. 13th St. on the market for $1.85 million. It was built by the city in 1964 on school district land in exchange for the district’s use of Kiggins Bowl for school sports. The city vacated the building in September 2011.

Todd Horenstein, assistant superintendent for Vancouver Public Schools, said the building wasn’t convenient for its purposes, and the district wasn’t equipped to operate as a property manager.

鈥淭hat’s not the work we do,鈥� Horenstein said. 鈥淪o we thought it would be best to sell the property and get it into a stronger use for downtown.鈥�

He said that with some minor tenant improvements, the building could continue to be used as office space. It is served by a three-story parking structure that exceeds minimum requirements for parking codes. Horenstein added that it sits in a prime location in downtown Vancouver, with access to Interstate 5 and Mill Plain Boulevard.

鈥淪o, it’s well positioned to be a very convenient work location in the downtown core,鈥� he said.
