To some in Portland鈥檚 architecture community, renowned designer Michael Graves is a polarizing figure. To the president of the United States, he鈥檚 a prized commodity.

President Barack Obama today appointed five individuals to positions within his administration, according to a White House press release. One of the positions, a new spot on the Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board, went to Graves.

The ATBCB, also known as the Access Board, has become a leading source of information on accessible design. Graves, who has been paralyzed from the waist down since 2003, has become known for his progress in the field, designing homes for wounded soldiers.

With his new position, Graves will help develop accessibility criteria for the built environment. He will also provide assistance on accessible design for federally funded facilities.

Other positions that were appointed include spots on the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, the Cultural Property Advisory Committee, the National Science Board and the Advisory Board of the National Air and Space Museum.

In Portland, Graves is best known as the architect behind the controversial Portland Building, which won both an American Institute of Architects honor award and the title of 鈥渙ne of the most hated buildings in America鈥� from Travel and Leisure magazine.
