A 13,826-square-foot former Safeway building in downtown Dallas will go up for bid May 15. Umpqua Bank owns the structure, which sits at 820 S.W. Church St. and is zoned for commercial use.
The 49-year-old building most recently was used as a storage facility by TTM Technologies.
Dallas City Manager Ron Foggin said the building and the property in the past drew a lot of interest, but nothing came of it.
“It was put up for auction several years ago, but there were no buyers,” he said.
That could be because it’s an awkward size, according to Foggin.
“For a small business, it’s kind of in between,” he said. “When you look at some of the bigger stores, it’s way undersized, but for a small business just getting started, 13,000 square feet is completely overwhelming. It’s one of those properties that happens to be oddly sized for what it is. I can understand why it’s been vacant, but it does have its own parking lot.
“And it’s one of those old concrete buildings. Those things are practically bomb-proof.”
The first of two property inspections is scheduled for Saturday, from 10 a.m. to noon. A second walk-through is scheduled for May 6, from 1 to 3 p.m.
Umpqua Bank executives set a minimum price of $175,000 in a cash-only transaction, meaning the sale will not be financed.
Sealed bids on the property are due May 15.
