Portland design firm Mayer/Reed recently received an honor award from the American Society of Landscape Architects for its contribution to Bud Clark Commons, a Portland homeless shelter.

The firm received a 2013 ASLA Professional Award for landscape architecture and urban design services on the $46.9 million Home Forward project.

Mayer/Reed partner Carol Mayer-Reed accepted the award Monday during ASLA’s annual meeting and awards ceremony in Boston. The project was well-received, she said.

“Even though it’s one of the smaller projects we’ve worked on, it’s one of the most important in terms of providing a model for getting people off the streets,” Mayer said.

The 130-unit Bud Clark Commons complex in Northwest Portland opened in 2011. Mayer/Reed designed exterior pedestrian spaces, two courtyards, building entries, a garden terrace and eco-roofs for the building in cooperation with Portland-based Holst Architecture.

The ASLA Professional Awards recognize excellence in landscape architecture for public places, residential properties, campuses, parks and urban planning. Unlike Bud Clark Commons, most of the entries in the residential category were high-end projects, Mayer said.

“This one really stood out to the jury because it was more community-based,” she said.
