Bridge models, visions of a city in 2114 and adaptive reuse ideas for historic buildings will be among the student projects featured in an upcoming exhibit as part of the Architecture Foundation of Oregon‘s Architects in Schools program.

The annual exhibit of final projects from elementary school student participants in the six-week program will open May 1. The projects, including three-dimensional models and drawings, will be on display for about a month in Portland at the Center for Architecture, Pioneer Place Mall, ZGF Architects‘ offices, Opsis Architecture‘s offices and PLACE Studio‘s offices.

A reception for the exhibit will take place May 1 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at all five locations.

AFO has run Architects in Schools for Portland-area students in grades three through five for more than 40 years, said Kim Knowles, associate director for the program. This school year, 49 volunteer design professionals and six University of Oregon architecture students led architecture lessons in 65 elementary classrooms in Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas counties.

The program is intended to expose students to architecture through lessons that link to subjects such as math and history, Knowles said.

“We have several goals,” she said. “One of them is letting students know that everything that they encounter has been designed. We also want them to relate design to what they’re studying in school.”
