Metro Senior Development Adviser Cheryl Twete is moving on.

Twete on May 12 will become Beaverton‘s community development director; Don Mazziotti retired from the position officially in December 2013. She has resided in Beaverton for more than 20 years and said she is eager to put its economic development tools to work.

“One of the mayor’s main priorities is the development of the new civic plan, and really trying to make the heart of the community a place where people can go and enjoy what Beaverton has to offer,” she said. It’s “really focusing on redevelopment in the downtown area.”

The Beaverton Civic Plan () was adopted in 2010 and lays out strategies for creating a more connected and livable community. A major component is development of a 50-acre downtown area called the Creekside District.

During nearly six years at Metro, Twete worked on high-profile projects including the Portland Expo Center, the Oregon Zoo master plan, the Schnitzer Concert Hall renovation and others. Most recently, she has participated in planning for a headquarters hotel serving the Oregon Convention Center. She believes the project is in good shape, despite ongoing opposition from local hoteliers.

“It’s something I’ve worked on a couple times in my career, and it’s a project I really believe in,” Twete said. “I think it will do good things in our region, but I’m also leaving it in a pretty good place. We’re about done with the development agreement and the room-block agreement, and that’s a big step in the process of moving that forward.”
