The Portland Development Commission is preparing to offer money for community improvement projects in five urban renewal areas.

In July, the PDC will begin accepting applications for chunks of $775,000 it will make available in Community Livability Grants during fiscal year 2014-15. The money will be split four ways: $300,000 in the Interstate Corridor URA; $200,000 in the Downtown Waterfront and River District URAs; $200,000 in the Lents Town Center URA; and $75,000 in the Gateway URA.

The grants are intended to help pay for real property improvements that in turn help foster vibrant neighborhoods, especially in disadvantaged areas. The application process is competitive, and successful projects tend to focus on accomplishing community objectives and social equity goals – often through creation of public resources like open space, community gardens, art installations or workforce training centers, among other things.

Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations, neighborhood and business associations and other neighborhood groups. Applicants must attend one of two mandatory workshops in July (times and locations to be announced), and meet minimum requirements for minority, women, disadvantaged and emerging small business participation.
