ZGF Architects has awarded a $10,000 scholarship and a summer internship at one of the firm’s offices to an architecture student at the University of California, Berkeley.

Shifan Deng is pursuing a master’s degree in architecture, and planning to complete a 10-week ZGF internship in summer 2015, said Janet Hull, an associate partner at ZGF’s Portland office and coordinator of the scholarship program. Deng hasn’t decided yet which one of the firm’s six offices he will join as an intern.

The Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Architectural Scholarship Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation was started 11 years ago in honor of late founding principal Norm Zimmer. The scholarship is administered by the Oregon Community Foundation and awarded each spring to an architecture student who in the fall will begin his or her final year in an accredited architectural program.

“The focus is on design,” Hull said. “It’s to recognize and honor students who have a passion for architecture.”

Two committees – one featuring ZGF employees – review the scholarship applications, which include a portfolio, a résumé, an essay and a letter of recommendation.

This year, more than 55 students from throughout the U.S. applied for the scholarship. All of the finalists were highly qualified, Hull said, but committee members were particularly impressed with Deng’s interest in sustainable architecture, ability to work independently and clarity of vision.
