The American Institute of Architects has awarded a scholarship that will cover cost of the Architect Registration Examination to a Portland-based architectural designer.

Holst Architecture staffer Rachel Brand was among 10 recipients of the 2014 Jason Pettigrew Memorial ARE Scholarship. Along with covering the nearly $1,500 cost of the seven-part examination, the scholarship includes a full set of Kaplan Architecture Education study guides.

Scholarship recipients were chosen based on their contributions to the profession or the community in the early stage of their careers, involvement in community or professional organizations, a demonstrated passion for pursuing registration, and strong letters of recommendation.

Brand said she has worked at Holst for the past year and half, focusing on retail and hospitality projects. Before moving to Portland, she worked for eight years at Alvarez/Morris Architectural Studio in Denver, Colo.

She earned her master’s degree in architecture in 2004 from the University of Colorado Denver.

Brand’s scholarship application emphasized her community service beyond the profession. This included mentoring Burmese refuges and volunteering at the Denver School of the Arts and other educational programs.

“(The ) wanted to know your outside work that you’ve done and your commitment to get licensed,” Brand said.
