The Portland Bureau of Development Services is seeking applications from people interested in filling upcoming Portland Design Commission vacancies.

Commission Chairwoman Guenevere Millius in December will reach the end of the eight-year term limit and BDS staffers are seeking someone to fill the role, city planner Tim Heron said. Other commissioners also are nearing the end of their terms, he added.

The seven-member commission reviews design proposals for large-scale new and infill development projects in the Central City Plan District and Gateway Regional Center. Commissioners also review appeals of smaller proposals and alterations to existing structures in design overlay zones throughout the city.

Commission meetings are held on the first and third Thursdays of the month. Meetings start during normal business hours, but often extend into the evening. Commissioners are expected to stay throughout meetings.

Commissioners serve four-year terms and may be reappointed once. They cannot hold a public elective office.

The vacancy created at the end of Millius’ term is for a commissioner with experience in design, engineering, financing, construction, management or development of buildings, Heron said. The commission must also include one representative of the Regional Arts and Culture Council and a representative of the public at-large.

The commission will appoint a new chairperson in January after Millius serves the remainder of her term, Heron said.
