Restore Oregon is set to host two happy hour discussions about a surge in Portland home demolitions.

鈥溾�� will take place today from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Velo Cult Bike Shop, 1969 N.E. 42nd Ave., and Tuesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Kells Brew Pub, 210 N.W. 21st Ave.

The gatherings are part of Restore Oregon’s Preservation Pub program, which is geared to inform citizens about the state’s historic places and local advocacy campaigns, and provide networking opportunities for preservationists.

At the upcoming events, speakers will discuss impacts of increasing numbers of single-family houses being torn down to make way for new development, Restore Oregon Executive Director Peggy Moretti said. by preservation advocates will be presented, she said.

鈥淲e are proposing some commonsense, near-term solutions and calling for some longer-term, more nuanced solutions, like zoning changes,鈥� she said.

Restore Oregon representatives last month joined other preservation advocates in urging Portland City Council to change policies regarding home demolition. Preservation advocates proposed changing the city definition of demolition, requiring all residential demolitions to adhere to minimum delay and notification requirements and establishing a task force to identify building and zoning code improvements to ensure demolitions are managed appropriately.
