Skanska USA Building has nearly completed construction of a 600-seat performing arts center and athletics facility at Madras High School, approximately a year after the project started.

The $13.5 million project resulted from a $26.7 million bond that Jefferson County School District voters passed in May 2012.

The 34,000-square-foot performing arts center has a host of technological features, including a highly flexible lighting system and acoustic cloud treatments that reflect sound well for theatrical performances, said John Williamson, Skanska’s senior project manager.

鈥淗istorically, all of the lighting is powered out of one room from one spot,鈥� he said. 鈥淗ere, it’s more localized with dimmer bars that are controlled by low voltage cabling. You can take that technology and move the dimmers around and do some different things with lighting.鈥�

Skanska built the cement block and structural steel performing arts center from the top down, installing the mechanical and electrical elements and finishes before starting on tiered seating. Crews used sizable aerial lifts to build up the top before they even began pouring elevated floor slabs, Williamson said.

The performing arts center, which also includes boys’ and girls’ locker rooms for athletics, will be completed by Nov. 1.

The athletics facility will have a seating capacity of 1,200, and have a BSS 1000 polyurethane track nearly on par with a collegiate surface. It will last 20 to 30 percent longer than a traditional surface, Williamson said. Other features include premium hardback seating and a spacious layout of concessions that will help improve flow efficiency at sporting events, he said.

The athletics facility will be ready for the high school’s football season when it kicks off on Sept. 12.
