Designs by two Portland architecture firms won a Center for Architecture competition to temporarily convert street parking into public gathering space.

Winning designs by Hennebery Eddy Architects and Scott | Edwards Architecture featuring seating and planter boxes will be installed on parking spaces in front of the center, at 403 N.W. 11th Ave., by Sept. 20. The date corresponds with , an international event where metered parking spots are transformed into temporary public parks. The installations will stand for about six weeks 鈥� through October.

After reviewing 16 submissions, the competition jury also gave a design by Seattle-based Robert Hutchison Architecture honorable mention, but it will not be built.

The winning installations will be part of the Portland Bureau of Transportation‘s . Now in its third year, the city program is modeled after similar ones in San Francisco and New York to transform street parking into patios. After successfully piloting Street Seats in 2012, PBOT this past fall announced plans to allow 10 more installations, mostly outside restaurants and bars.

Hennebery Eddy Architects’ Street Seats design, 鈥�Log Dam,鈥� includes long wooden benches surrounded by planters.

A design by Scott | Edwards Architecture, 鈥�A Dialogue,鈥� will have two oversized chairs made from a steel frame with wooden slats on top.

鈥淚t’s poking fun at the amount of space that cars require,鈥� said Scott | Edwards designer Ryan Yoshida, who helped design the installation.
