Portland is becoming increasingly attractive for tech companies because of its growing talent pool, competitive wages and relatively low cost of living, according to a recent market report.

The 2014 鈥High-Technology Office Outlook鈥 report, issued by services firm , ranks Portland eighth among 34 markets across the country. The analysis, geared to inform tech companies’ expansion decisions, based the ranking on factors that include wage growth, intellectual capital and venture funding in high-tech markets.

High-tech job growth helped propel Portland from 16th last year, said Patricia Raicht, JLL vice president of research for Pacific Northwest markets. Recent developments include San Francisco-based online gaming company KIXEYE Inc. opening a Portland office and Portland-based tech company Puppet Labs planning to move this fall into expanded downtown headquarters to accommodate growing staff.

Portland also ranked highly this year based on a new metric called 鈥渕arket dynamism,鈥 Raicht said. This measure included factors such as a city’s walkability, clustering of tech companies in certain areas and the vibrancy of the office market.

Creative office development in Portland’s contributed to the city ranking third in market dynamism after San Francisco and Los Angeles, Raicht said. Cheaper rents and real estate prices may be giving Portland the edge over other cities, she said.

鈥淲e definitely are a bargain,鈥 she said.
