The Collaborative Life Sciences Building, now open in Portland’s South Waterfront District, has received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design platinum rating from the U.S. Green Building Council.

The $295 million project, a joint venture of Oregon Health & Science University, Portland State University and Oregon State University, earned the designation through various sustainable features. Some are green roofs, toilets that flush with rainwater and energy efficient lighting and ventilation. Another factor considered was the building’s proximity to public transportation, including the Portland Streetcar and TriMet’s MAX orange light-rail line slated to open in September 2015.

A celebration was held in June for the opening of the approximately 650,000-square-foot, two-building complex with classrooms, lecture halls, laboratories, research centers and patient clinics that will be used by the three universities. The 12-story tower portion of the complex will house OHSU‘s School of Dentistry.

Portland-based SERA Architects and Los Angeles-based CO Architects designed the project to foster collaboration between students, researchers and faculty members who will use the building. JE Dunn Construction was the general contractor.
