As a young woman, Cherise Schacter dreamed of traveling around the world writing human interest stories for Time magazine. Luckily for the local building industry, fate had other plans for her.

Schacter’s planned career path took a turn while she was in high school, when she landed a job with Emerick Construction. That job led to a role with an architecture firm, where she added to her understanding of the building industry. By the time she found herself at , she had gained a perspective of the industry from three different viewpoints: the architect, the contractor and the engineer. That deep understanding of the many moving parts of a project allowed Schacter and Interface to create a customized position for her as a specifications coordinator.

In her role with the engineering firm, she maintains all specifications and quality control checks. She also is responsible for incorporating suggestions to improve the firm’s work flow.

鈥淲e have a program in place; it’s kind of like a suggestion box,鈥 Schacter said. 鈥淚t’s my job to disseminate that information, to see if we can make things more coordinated, to find the technical engineers if we have a detail in a drawing that needs to be corrected.鈥

Schacter also is heavily involved in the Construction Specifications Institute. She has filled the position of president with the local chapter of the organization. At the national level, she serves as chairwoman of CSI’s certification preparations committee. In addition, she presents to local trade groups.

鈥淚’m a high energy person,鈥 Schacter said. 鈥淚 like to keep busy.鈥
