Academia functions best in facilities designed and maintained for those purposes. Robyn Pierce has more than 30 years of experience making those spaces work for students and teachers.
As facility manager at Portland State University, Pierce oversees approximately 5.2 million square feet of functional campus building space. She manages major construction and renovation projects with consideration of how each upgrade will affect both students and teachers. She works to promote and ensure fairness and inclusion of minority and women contractors in the bidding process for those projects.
Her experience at PSU includes planning, design and construction of two mixed-use residence halls, the Native American Student and Community Center, renovation and expansion of the Helen Gordon Child Care Center, a new engineering building, and major renovations of historic buildings on campus. She manages 120 employees and manages a yearly capital expenditure that can range from $35 million to more than $100 million, depending on revenue and allocations that have ranged from $35 million to over $100 million. She oversaw PSU’s first LEED-rated buildings on campus and played a critical role in the university becoming the first campus in the nation to receive a Salmon Safe certification.
Pierce is involved in the Association of Physical Plant Administrators of Colleges and Universities both nationally and regionally, and served as vice president of professional development for the organization. She also participates in the National Association of Colleges and University Business Officers and has served as a panelist and presenter for a regional affiliate of the organization.
