The Portland Bureau of Transportation is seeking ways to handle increased demand for parking because of denser development in the city’s commercial corridors.

PBOT staffers and members of a volunteer street parking advisory committee are in early stages of gathering data for a yearlong study, bureau spokeswoman Diane Dulken said. It will tie into the city’s draft 2035 Comprehensive Plan. The long-range look at anticipated growth in Portland over the next 20 years reflects the increasing popularity of mixed-use developments along commercial corridors.

鈥淎s the city develops centers and corridors, that means there will be added pressure for parking,鈥� she said.

Dulken said the study is not far enough along for her to name any potential solutions to the parking crunch. By next fall, the study will outline possible ways to better support the parking needs of businesses in commercial districts, she said.

In conjunction with the new comprehensive plan, PBOT staffers are investigating how to improve movement through the city’s centers and corridors for bicyclists, pedestrians and public transportation riders, Dulken said.
