Portland-based Architects has been recognized by two chapters of the American Institute of Architects for contributions to a Colorado project.

The firm’s design for the $10 million North American headquarters of sports clothing company Pearl Izumi in Louisville, Colo. earned the firm an Colorado Honor Award for Built and an AIA Denver Merit Award for Built Architecture as part of the chapters’ 2014 Achievements in Architecture . They were presented to the firm earlier this month during an event in Silverthorne, Colo.

The 55,000-square-foot Pearl Izumi North America headquarters, on an 8-acre site at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, opened late last year. The building includes open workspaces, conference rooms and amenities such as a fitness room, bike storage, a protected courtyard and an outdoor amphitheater.

ZGF Architects designed the concrete, wood, glass and naturally weathering steel structure with accents of vibrant color and high ceilings. The design brings in sunlight and uses natural ventilation to link the interior spaces with the outdoor scenery surrounding the building.

The main goal of the design was to interpret into the structure the company’s brand identity that wearing its clothing never keeps people from going outside, said Randy McGee, the principal in charge of design for the project. The building connects to nearby hiking trails, has large windows that face mountains and has garage doors to accommodate employees who ride mountain bikes, he said.

鈥淚t’s a building that fits well with the snow and the sun,鈥 McGee said.
