Seven Portland homes built to passive house standards will be open to the public this week for the 11th annual .
Free tours of the homes will take place Friday through Sunday during the event intended to publicize the European green building technique. Sponsors include the International Passive House Association, Passive House Northwest and the North American Passive House Network.
Passive house standards aim to reduce buildings’ energy consumption through thick insulation, draft elimination and mechanical ventilation. The building technique is mainstream in Europe, but slowly gaining momentum in Portland and other parts of the U.S.
