Thirteen students will be able to pursue their dreams of careers in construction and related fields thanks to a Portland-area scholarship fund.

The Schweiger Memorial Scholarship Fund, created to honor the industry contributions of the father-son team of Forrest and Konrad Schweiger, has awarded a total of 194 scholarships totaling $512,000 since its inception 16 years ago.

This year’s recipients, who were selected from a field of 34 candidates, will split a total of $45,000 to pursue college studies during the 2015-16 academic year in areas including civil engineering, construction management, chemical engineering and mechanical engineering.

Winners of sponsored $5,000 scholarships are: Evan Altorfer, a junior pursuing an engineering degree at Oregon State University, who received the Oregon Iron Works/Vigor scholarship; Sara Ashback, a sophomore pursuing an engineering degree at Montana State University, who received the Tarlow Naito & Summers scholarship; and Garrett Childress, a freshman pursuing an engineering degree at OSU, who received the Ness & Campbell Crane scholarship.

Jacob Hoffman, a junior studying engineering at OSU, received a $3,000 award presented to a veteran by the Ashback family.

Jakob Neuenschwander, another OSU junior pursuing an engineering degree, received a $3,000 award sponsored by Hamilton Construction.

Winners of $3,000 general scholarships include: Nicholas Hossley, a North Bend High School senior who plans to attend OSU in the fall; Kolton Mahr, an OSU junior; Matthew Olney, an OSU sophomore; Tasha Petermann, a Montana State University junior; Marshall Ruehl, a Washington State University junior; Wiley Wolfe, an OSU junior; Devin Wyckoff, an OSU junior; and Dylan Yamamoto, a George Fox University junior. All are pursuing engineering degrees except Ruehl, who is pursuing one in construction management.

All winners will be honored during an awards dinner April 24 at the Sentinel Hotel in downtown Portland. The event will feature a silent auction to benefit the scholarship fund.
