Construction on a $95-million renovation and expansion to the ‘s student union in Eugene reached a milestone this week with final beam installed on the new addition.

University officials and project team members held a topping out ceremony on Wednesday to mark the progress since crews from Portland-based general contractor broke ground in January 2014 on a transformation of the Erb Memorial Union. The final beam crews put in place during the ceremony was signed by university students and staffers.

Portland-based designed the with the aim of making the building’s often confusing layout more navigable and to provide more visibility to student groups that had been tucked into the basement and other hard-to-find spots.

Along with extensive renovations to the existing 130,000-square-foot student union, plans called for adding 80,000 square feet of new space. Sections of the building considered the most historically and architecturally compelling were preserved, while the remaining portions were torn down or reconstructed.

The project is targeted to achieve Leadership in Energy and Sustainable Design certification.
