Southeast Division Street is set to gain another multifamily project with construction scheduled to start this summer on 28 units of micro housing.

Crews from Portland-based general contractor Joseph Hughes Construction will likely break ground on the Division Street Apartments in July or August, said Peter Grimm, a principal with Portland-based Scott | Edwards Architecture, the project architect. A single family house, built in 1908, on the property at 3021 S.E. Division St. will be torn down to make room for the development, he said.

Project plans call for constructing a four-story apartment building with units ranging from 350 to 500 square feet, Grimm said. Although small, each unit will have its own kitchen and bathroom.

鈥淭he developers are looking to build an unmet need in the apartment market,鈥� Grimm said. 鈥淚t’s a full unit. They’re just trying to provide a quality space, but also to serve a population that’s looking for a great compact space in a great location.鈥�

Grimm declined to name the project developer. Rob Matthews of Blue Dart Acquisitions LLC is listed as the applicant on an early assistance intake filed late last year with the Bureau of Development Services seeking city of Portland feedback on the proposed project. Blue Dart Acquisitions, and its manager David Aoyagi, is also the owner of the project site, according to city assessor’s records.

Planned amenities for the development include tenant storage space, bike parking, a multipurpose room and a rooftop deck, Grimm said. Since the complex won’t include tenant parking, the project team is exploring ways to promote alternative transportation, such as providing space for a ride-share service, he said.
